What are the handlebars in DDR?

I am researching the DDR dance mat to get. I try to find the best metal pad. It is very difficult to find reviews on different dance floors. As I have not found good reviews ION pad, I'm looking on the pad energy. One thing I do not understand what the handlebars are for. I played a lot of songs on the foam pad and I do not understand what the needs are for bars. I can save money by not getting the handlebars so I ask this question. Also if anyone has any recommendations on this pad I should get, it would be nice too. Thank you!

you put your arms behind you and you can hold the handle for balance. it may help when you play the levels more quickly because it stabilizes you and allows more movement. my friend had 2 of them and she did not like it just for the bars they took off:) hope it helps!
